Sara Umga is one of the toughest treks in Himachal Pradesh that is recommended for all those who are looking for some hard core trek. The journey takes one through the lush green Valley of Parvati to Lahul.

How to Reach Rumsu ?

By Bus/taxi: Take a bus headed towards Manali from Delhi/Chandigarh and get down at Patlikuahal stop(20 km before Manali) and take a taxi to Rumsu. Taxi charges are Rs 500-700 per vehicle (7 seater)

Free Pick Up facility is provided by Kailashrath Treks till 9 AM for Rumsu base camp at Patlikuhal.

 

Itinerary

Day 1 - Reporting at Rumsu base camp

Up on reaching Patilkauhal, pick up facility is available till 9 am to Rumsu base came. All the participants will undergo registration process. After breakfast; proceed for acclimatization walk.  Later come back to the campsite for lunch. Post lunch there will be a general orientation on techniques and awareness. Overnight at Rumsu base camp

Day 2 - Trek to Bhudhaban

After breakfast; all the participants will be transferred to Tosh village by Jeep ride. Tosh village will be the starting point of the trek to Bhudhaban. The trek route goes along Tosh Nala or a stream and into dense pine forest. It takes about 5 hours to reach Bhudhaban that is sitting at an elevation of 3020 m. up on reaching Bhudhaban; enjoy the view as the supper is getting ready. Enjoy your meal and head back to tents for the night.

Day 3 - Trek from Bhudhaban to Sharam Thach

Have a scrumptious breakfast and start early, as the day ahead is gonna be enduring. The treks takes about 5 – 6 hours to complete and the trek route will lead you through green meadows and rhododendron; you will also come across the best scree you will ever see here. One can witness Tichu glacier and supposedly there is a bridge that allows one to cross the stream called Tichu Nala. Overnight stay in tents at Sharam Thach

Day 4 - Trek from Sharam Thach to Shamshi Thach

After breakfast; proceed for the trek of the day – from Sharam Thach to Shamshi Thach. The trek route requires one to climb steep scree from Sharam Thach and ends at the foothills of Tosh Glacier. On the way you will come across patches of snow and a gushing waters of River Tosh.  One must descend further to reach Shamshi Thach to find glaciers and stunning peaks. Overnight in the tents at Shamshi Thach

Day 5 - Trek from Shamshi Thach – Kuta Thach

Start your day with a healthy breakfast; proceed for the trek today to Kuta Thach. Kuta Thach is a wonderful place with green meadow right next to Tosh glacier. located at the base of Sara Umga Pass, the trek takes about six to seven hours through steep scree and reach this paradise. Although today's trek can be a bit exhaustive, it is compensated with a spectacular view from Kuta Thach.

Day 6 - Trek to Sara Umga Pass from Kuta Thach

Post breakfast; start for the trek to Sara Umga Pass from Kuta Thach. This beautiful trek although takes less time to reach the point, it requires one to concentrate and endure the journey through moraine. It requires one to be agile while crossing this route to reach the highlight of the tour. The trek takes about 5 hours to reach the base camp. This base camp is just 2 hours from the pass making it easy for the next days' trek.Overnight at Sara Umga Pass.

Day 7 - Trek to Chota Dhara

The trek commences early today. Since the base camp is situated just 2 hour from Sara Umga Pass, it gives a good head start for us to reach the pass in good weather. Up on reaching the pass; you will witness a fabulous views of peaks in both Lahaul valley as well as the Tosh valley and other surrounding valleys. After a while we must start our descent by keeping left and be very careful to not step into crevasses that is formed on the trail. The trek to Chota Dhara is quite easy with not many hart terrains and challenges. One must cross chandra river via bucket bridge system to reach the campsite in Chota Dhara. Overnight stay in tents at Chota Dhara.

Day 8 - Drive to Manali for Departure

Start the day with a delicious breakfast and say your good byes to the fellow participants. From Chota Dhara, you will be transferred to Manali by Jeep. Make sure you book buses to Delhi/chandigarh after 5 pm.

Things to Carry

Trekking shoes: Do not carry a Sports Shoe. Carry good trekking shoes with grip. Make sure it is a water proof trekking shoes with ankle support.

Three layers of warm clothes: Two or three-layer jackets, fleece jacket and a padded jacket

Two/Three trek pants: Carry light cotton trek pants. Avoid denim/jeans and shorts. They are not suitable for trekking.

Three t-shirts (collared/dri-fit): It is advisable to carry a Full sleeved t-shirts to prevent sun burns on the neck and arms. Carry one or two dri-fit t-shirts.

Thermals: Carry thermals (top and bottom).

Sunglasses: There will be lot of snow on the trek which can cause snow blindness. Thus Sunglasses are mandatory.

Cap: At high altitude, the sun is extra harsh so carry a cap to protect you.

Water proof hand gloves: Carry water proof gloves and avoid woollen gloves as they will get wet if you touch snow.

Socks (3-4 pairs) and a pair of woollen socks: Apart from two sports socks, you can take a pair of woollen socks for the night.

Headlamp/LED torch: Mandatory

Raincoat/Ponchos: At high altitudes, snowfall and rain are quite common and it’s mandatory to carry a poncho so that you don’t get wet. The trek will continue as planned even during rainfall. Your poncho should protect you rain. Carry a backpack cover for extra protection from rain for your belongings.

Lunch box and water bottle: Every participant should have their personal lunch box and a water bottle [insulated type].
